Protection and management

There is no special world heritage law in Sweden or Finland. Regular national laws and area protection instruments are thought to be enough to ensure good protection of the World Heritage Site and its values. Since there are many different actors and stake holders within the World Heritage Site, it’s important to spread the knowledge about the World Heritage Site and how it can be affected by different activities.

In Sweden it is the County Administrative Board of Västernorrland and in Finland it is Metsähallitus Parks and Wildlife that have the main responsibility to coordinate the management and development of the High Coast/Kvarken Archipelago World Heritage Site. The World heritage Convention from UNESCO give the countries a task to protect, display and teach about the World Heritage Site.  We at the County Administrative board and Metsähallitus aim to deepen everyone’s understanding and experience of the High Coast and Kvarken Archipelago. We want to make sure that the local communities have a say in the management of the area. To preserve the world heritage values and to manage the area together is a basis to ensure that it in the future still will be possible to experience and understand the unique World Heritage we have here.

Cooperation

The work of managing the World Heritage requires close cooperation with many actors, both local, reagional, national and international. There are local groups for the cooperation within management and development. In Sweden there is the High Coast management Board and in Finland the World Heritage Delegation for Kvarken Archipelago. There is also a transnational cooperation group. The High Coast and Kvarken Archipelago also cooperates with other World Heritage Sites in Sweden, Finland and the other Nordic countries.

The High Coast and Kvarken Archipelago Management plan

The County Administrative Board of Västernorrland and Metsähallitus Parks and Wildlife have together made a management plan for the High Coast/Kvarken Archipelago World Heritage Site. The plan is a tool to jointly ensure that the World Heritage values are preserved, and that the area can be developed in a sustainable way. The management plan describes the current status of the World Heritage values and how the management is structured. It also contains planned activities for the upcoming years. The plan is valid until 2030. You can find the management plan and a summary in Swedish and Finnish in the Data bank.
